Unit 2: The Constitution
In this unit, students will learn about the strengths and weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation, the Constitution Convention, the ratification process, and the structure of our government under the U.S. Constitution.
Thursday, September 26: Bell Ringer - Who are you researching for your Bio. Box Project?
Students had an in-class workday on their Bio. Box Project.
Friday, September 27: Bell Ringer - What were the 3 bold ideas presented to the Second Continental Congress in Lee's Resolution?
Students learned about the strengths of the Articles of Confederation.
Monday, September 30: Bell Ringer - What were the two strengths of the Articles of Confederation?
Students learned about the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation and why leaders called for a convention to change them.
Tuesday, October 1: Bell Ringer - What event helped Americans realized that the government under the Articles of Confederation was too weak?
Students watch a video about the Constitutional Convention. They were asked to keep track of the disagreements and compromises made at the Convention.
Wednesday, October 2: Bell Ringer - When and where was the convention held to amend the Articles of Confederation?
Students were given an in-class work day on their Bio. Box project.
Thursday, October 3: Bell Ringer - What were the 2 major compromises made during the Constitutional Convention?
Students learned about the ratification process to make the Constitution the "law of the land" and why a Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution.
Friday, October 4: Bell Ringer - How does the Constitution get amended?
Students learned about the rights protected in the Bill of Rights. They also learned about the different types of governmental powers, delegated, reserved, and concurrent, and which level of government get which power.
Monday, October 7: Bell Ringer (1 & 4) - What is Federalism?
Bell Ringer (5 & 7) - What is the tenth Amendment?
Students learned about the different branches of the federal government. They learned about the requirements needed to be met to serve in each branch and who currently serves in those branches.
Tuesday, October 8: Bell Ringer (1 & 4) - What is "separation of powers"?
Bell Ringer (5 & 7) - What are delegated powers?
Students learned about the separation of powers in the federal government and the system of checks and balances used to keep each branch from becoming too powerful.
Wednesday, October 9: Bell Ringer (1 & 4) - What are "checks and balances"?
Bell Ringer (5 & 7) - Why do we have checks and balances?
Students learned about the ways to become a US Citizen and the duties and responsibilities of citizens. They then had time to review for their test or work on their Quarter 1 project.
Thursday, October 10: Bell Ringer - How many Bell Ringers do you have?
Students took their Unit 2 test.
