Unit 1: College and Career Exploration
Students will investigate different careers and colleges that will help them get those careers. They end the unit by creating a Career Portfolio.
Monday, January 27: Bell Ringer - What do you want to be when you grow up?
Students take an interest inventory on the MNCIS website to see a list of career clusters they may be interested in.
Tuesday, January 28: Bell Ringer - What are your top 5 career clusters?
Students had a workday for the Career Info Sheet.
Wednesday, January 29: Bell Ringer - What is your top career choice?
Students learn about the different types of colleges: technical, community, and 4-year. They compare the different characteristics of each.
Thursday, January 30: Bell Ringer - What characteristics you want in a college?
Students go to the MNCIS website and complete a college sort to see options of potential colleges that would help them reach the job of their choice.
Friday, January 31: Bell Ringer - How many colleges match your criteria?
Students were given time to work on completing their college sort on the MNCIS website.
Monday, February 3: Bell Ringer - What is your top college choice?
Students are assigned the Career Portfolio project and are introduced on how to write a cover letter. They are then given time to work. The complete Career Portfolio is due by 9/20.
Tuesday, February 4: Bell Ringer - What is a resume?
Students are shown how to write a resume and what information to include and then are given time to work.
Wednesday, February 5: Bell Ringer - Who would you ask to write you a letter of recommendation?
Students are instructed on the what information is included in a letter of recommendation and asked to brainstorm 2 people they would ask and to write a paragraph about why each person would be a good choice. They also need to create a College Application list tracking the materials they would need for a complete application to the college of their choice.

Students completed the Reality Check activity on the MNCIS website to see what type of lifestyle they could potentially afford in the future.
